Maree's Story: Is your NRMA membership up to date?
I was off to the Territory for a working holiday...my dog on the back seat of my new SUV and the van on the back.
Having read some reviews in the Open Road in the past, I decided the RAV 4 V6 was going to give me all the power I needed to tow my camper van and get me safely to The Alice. And as I was going to be travelling on some remote Australian roads, I had the security of my NRMA Gold Premeum Care Membership.
All started well. The RAV towed the van well in the rain and up the hills so I decided to take the roads less travelled. Rain turned to scorching heat...it was January of course!
When I realised that the car was not steering well I pulled over to the side of the road. Ah! A flat tire! What was I to do? I couldn't find the manual to the car...I'd forgotten that it was tucked away in the campervan as I'd been reading it.
So stranded in the middle of nowhere, with just the dog and me, no car manual, just having recovered from shoulder surgery and it was 40° in the shade and no passing cars...what was I to do? Call the NRMA of course!
The lady on the other end tried to be helpful but my car was not listed and mobile reception was dropping out... (Note to self - remember to update your membership details with the NRMA before travelling.) So I called a friend who sorted out updating my details with the NRMA.
The roadside assist people rang me back. "Where are you?" " I don't know," I said,"Somewhere west of Balranald." Then I remembered my satellite navigation system...S 34° E 141°...in fact I'd travelled across the boarder and was on the Sturt Highway about 100km west of Mildura!
In just over an hour the NRMA had organised a patrolman from Mildura to come to my assistance, the tyre was changed and advice given on where to get a new tyre. And the dog and I were happily and safely on our way to The Alice!
NRMA Members receive peace of mind with coverage on the road, as well as access to a range of great benefits including exclusive discounts and special offers.
